The Halifax Regional Municipality is an amalgamation of the old City of Halifax, The old City of Dartmouth, The old Town of Bedford, and the surrounding old County of Halifax. 

     Much of the City of Halifax is located on a peninsula almost entirely surrounded by water. There are 6 major routes that access the Peninsula creating some traffic congestion during the morning and evening rush hours. However, compared to many large urban centers Halifax has a fairly smooth traffic flow.

      Halifax is the cultural, financial and political hub of the Halifax Regional Municipality, and the largest urban area of Atlantic Canada. Most communities will however, have their own shopping, dining, and entertainment districts. Halifax is also the education capital of Atlantic Canada with 5 Universities and many colleges and technical schools.
 

 Shopping

 There are three major shopping areas on the peninsula of Halifax: 
  •  Downtown Core/Spring Garden Road:
    • There are several malls downtown, Scotia Square, Park Lane, and Spring Garden Place. However, most retail outlets are found in specialty boutiques.
  • The Halifax Shopping Center​:
    • The second largest shopping center in metro, along with its annex across the street, will satisfy most of your shopping needs.​Recently went through a $70 million dollar renovation. 
  • Bayers Lake Retail Park:
    • ​Large retail sector containing many large box stores, family restaurants, entertainment, movies, building supplies, etc., Although not technically on the peninsula, it is a major shopping destination for those residing on the peninsula.
 Housing Types

Housing density on the peninsula is the highest in Atlantic Canada and all housing types can be found there. Everything from traditional two stories, bungalows, town homes, high rise Apartment Condominiums, older Victorian and Georgian Homes, as well as new contemporary homes.
 
North End: smaller 2 storey and bungalow homes dominate. A large explosion during World War 1 destroyed much of the north end. As a result, most of the homes are under 80 years old. Unique neighborhoods such as the Hydrostones, possessing their own flare and personality are very trendy and desirable.

West End: Mature neighborhoods with larger homes, most under 80 years old. Well maintained properties, many large fenced yards, mature trees. Great family neighborhoods that are safe and enjoyable to walk.

South End: Some of the oldest homes in metro, many of which have been renovated. These houses can be very elegant and often showcase extensive grounds. As a result of the subdivision of many large estate lots recently, it is very possible to find newer homes as well. Park like environment with beautiful parks and walking distance to downtown.

Housing prices vary drastically depending upon which part of the peninsula you are looking for.

The North End: ranging from $ 180,000 to $ 740,000.
The West End: ranging from $ 180,000 to $ 1,575,000. +
The South End: ranging from $ 150,000 to $ 10,000,000+-

 
Commuting Distances/Times:
 
All areas of the peninsula are within a few minutes of downtown. Easily accessed from all areas by metro transit.
